Introduction
Was your toy recalled?
In 2007 Bindeez beads, known in the USA as Aqua Dots, were recalled because they contained a chemical similar to the date rape drug GHB. When swallowed they can cause unconsciousness, seizures, drowsiness, coma and occasionally death.US global toy company Mattel recalled over 20,000,000 toys in 2007.
The toys, made in China and Mexico, feature lead paint which can cause poisoning, or small detachable parts which can cause choking, or magnets which can cause intestinal perforation and death if swallowed. You can check to see if a toy is on the latest US recall lists via our search or contact the authorities in your country.
If you are unsure of the name, reading the Mattel and Fisher Price Recall List may help.Or check Mattel’s UK helpline: 0162 850 0303
or Mattel’s US recall hotline: 800-916-4498
Mattel’s international website lists recalls by name, with images, and gives country contact details.
Fisher Price is a division of Mattel. Mattel should send you information and a pre-paid postage label to send the toy back. Mattel normally sends a voucher for the retail value within 6-8 weeks so you can buy Mattel or Fisher-Price toys.
Who is to Blame?
Many parties can be to blame, from manufacturer, to subcontractor, to inspector, or even unsafe use. According to the British Toy and Hobby Association, btha.co.uk, quoted by permission, “The UK injury data also indicates that most of the injuries reported appeared to be incidental to the toy involved. For example, the victim (and it is not always a child) tripped over the toy, fell over the toy etc.”
So reasonable standards and enforcement are needed to protect consumers, as well as sensible caution about entirely new technologies and applications. For some ideas about what turns a toy into trouble, check W.A.T.C.H’s annual Ten Worst Toys list at toysafety.org, and have a look at the progress they report in their Report Card page.
