Magnets

Tiny Magnets Can Kill

Tiny powerful magnets in many popular toys can fall out, and are easily swallowed by children. Two or more magnets in different parts of the child’s intestine can then join, rupturing the bowel and requiring a medical operation. At least one case resulted in death, according to Channel 4.

If you believe a child has swallowed these magnets, you should seek medical attention at once because illness develops very rapidly and may seem to be nothing serious.

From summer 2008 toys with these magnets were required to carry a special warning label in the EU.

Worried? Search to checks toy recalls, or try your country’s contacts. The Mattel / Fisher Price recall list might help too.
