Pets are not toys, and when they are unwanted they sometimes have to be adopted. Untrained children and pets can harm one another, and pet toys can be hazardous to both.

Dogs may choke on toys or swallow bits which need surgical removal. Experts at Texas A&M recommend not giving dogs toys that are so soft that they can chew bits off them, such as plastic or rubber. Toys should be the right size and not small enough to fit in the throat.

Cats chase anything that moves and may ingest small items which they cannot digest, and may lick anything. Plastic bags, strings and elastic bands are not suitable for cats.

Contaminated pet foods imported into the USA from China have killed a large number of pets, so check the latest recalls. There are even cased of contaminated birdfood.

Some pet toys have dangerously high levels of lead, cadmium, and chromium, says consumeraffairs.com.
